What to Know About the FedEx St. Jude Championship Format

August 6, 2025 by markmusicrecordshop

FedEx St. Jude Championship format sets the stage for the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs. Played as a 72-hole, no-cut stroke play tournament, this event features the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings following the regular season finale at the Wyndham Championship.

Tournament Format Breakdown

  • Field: Limited to the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings after the regular season.
  • Rounds: The event spans four rounds (72 holes) of stroke play.
  • No Cut: Unlike traditional PGA Tour events, all 70 competitors play all four rounds. No one is eliminated after 36 holes.
  • Winner: The player with the lowest cumulative score after 72 holes is declared the champion.

What Happens in a Tie?

If there’s a tie for first place after the final round, the event moves into a sudden-death playoff. The playoff holes are played in the following order:
Hole 18 → Hole 18 → Hole 17 → Repeat Hole 18 until a winner is decided.

FedExCup Points & Playoff Implications

  • The winner earns 2,000 FedExCup points, quadruple the amount awarded at regular season events.
  • These points are pivotal for players aiming to advance to the next rounds of the FedExCup Playoffs.

What Comes Next?

  • After the FedEx St. Jude Championship, only the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings move on to the BMW Championship.
  • From there, the field narrows again to the top 30, who will compete in the Tour Championship—the final stop where the FedExCup champion is crowned.

Lottie Woad Scottish Open Win Marks Historic Professional Debut

July 28, 2025 by markmusicrecordshop

Lottie Woad holding the Scottish Open trophy after winning her professional debut in 2025

Lottie Woad made headlines in her professional debut by capturing the 2025 Scottish Open title at Dundonald Links, finishing three strokes clear of the field. The 21-year-old English golfer, who recently transitioned to the professional ranks after an exceptional amateur career, led from start to finish and closed with a clutch birdie on the 18th to secure a 21-under-par total.

Woad, who held the No. 1 amateur ranking for over 50 weeks, began the tournament with a 67 to tie for the first-round lead, followed by a standout second-round 65 to take control. Despite a late challenge from Hyo Joo Kim, who briefly caught up on the final day, Woad remained composed. She answered with back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to pull ahead and sealed the deal with another on 18.

Her Scottish Open victory caps a remarkable summer stretch. As an amateur, she won the KPMG Women’s Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour and finished T3 at the Evian Championship—an LPGA major—where she also set a new amateur scoring record. These performances qualified Woad for her LPGA Tour card through the LEAP program, granting her a two-year exemption on the LPGA Tour through 2027.

LPGA Makes History: 17 Different Champions Open 2025 Season

July 1, 2025 by markmusicrecordshop

Close-up of the LPGA Tour logo in white on a black tee box marker, showing a silhouette of a female golfer mid-swing with the letters "LPGA" beside it.

The LPGA Tour parity storyline is dominating headlines in 2025, as the season opened with an unprecedented 17 different winners in the first 17 events. This remarkable level of diversity marks the first time in the LPGA’s 75-year history that no player has repeated as champion through this many tournaments.

A few standout stats help illustrate the scope of this achievement:

  • The 17 winners represent eight different countries, showcasing the global depth of talent.
  • Six of the 17 champions were first-time LPGA winners.
  • This new record surpasses previous season-opening streaks of 15 different winners, set in both 2017 and 1991.

While the absence of a dominant player—such as Nelly Korda, who had already achieved six victories by this point in 2024—might suggest a lack of star power, insiders view it differently. The streak is viewed as a testament to the depth, parity, and competitiveness across the tour.

Rather than one name repeatedly topping the leaderboard, fans are witnessing a dynamic mix of talent rising to the occasion each week. As the season progresses, the big question remains: Who will be the first to win twice?

The 2025 LPGA Tour continues to deliver surprises, and this run of unique winners is one of the most compelling storylines in recent memory.

J.J. Spaun Wins 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont with Clutch Birdie on 18

June 16, 2025 by markmusicrecordshop

J.J. Spaun celebrates with the U.S. Open trophy after winning the 2025 championship at Oakmont Country Club.

J.J. Spaun wins 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, capturing his first major championship. He finished at 1-under par, becoming the only player to break par for the tournament. Spaun secured the title with a dramatic 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, sealing a memorable victory.

Meanwhile, Robert MacIntyre made a strong push late in the round. He nearly tied the U.S. Open comeback record but finished second at +1.

The final round was heavily impacted by weather. Heavy rain and delays disrupted play, creating difficult conditions throughout the day. Players had to adjust on the fly, as Oakmont’s course became increasingly unforgiving.

Sam Burns and Adam Scott, the overnight leaders, struggled in the worsening weather. Burns was also involved in a questionable relief ruling after encountering a soggy lie, which drew attention from fans and commentators alike.

Another standout moment came from Justin Hastings. He made history as the first Caymanian to compete in the U.S. Open, and he finished as the low amateur of the tournament.

Off the course, there was additional drama. Reports surfaced that former champion Wyndham Clark was accused of damaging lockers inside the Oakmont clubhouse.

Although the leaderboard shifted frequently on Sunday, Spaun’s late birdie proved to be the defining moment. His win marks a career milestone and a memorable chapter in U.S. Open history.

Oakmont, PA – June 13, 2025
The 2025 U.S. Open is officially underway at the historic Oakmont Country Club, and the first round delivered a mix of stellar play, surprises, and signature U.S. Open toughness.

J.J. Spaun Sets the Pace with Bogey-Free 66

J.J. Spaun leads the field after a flawless opening round, carding a bogey-free 66 (-4) on one of golf’s toughest tests. Spaun wasted no time asserting himself, rolling in four birdies over his first eight holes and needing just 26 putts to navigate Oakmont’s notoriously fast greens.

“I kept it simple and didn’t make many mistakes,” Spaun said post-round. “That’s the key out here.”

Notable Round 1 Highlights

Brooks Koepka Closes Strong

The two-time U.S. Open winner surged late, birdieing his final two holes to post a solid 68 (-2). With his major championship experience, Koepka is once again in the hunt.

Jon Rahm Eagled the 4th

Rahm, the 2021 champion, electrified the crowd with a massive eagle on the par-5 4th hole. He sits at 2-under, just two shots off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler Stumbles

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler couldn’t get comfortable, finishing at 3-over par. Despite coming in as a favorite, Oakmont’s tough layout took its toll.

Course Conditions Prove Brutal

Oakmont lived up to its reputation. With only 10 players finishing under par, Thursday’s scoring average crept close to 5-over, confirming once again that the U.S. Open is golf’s ultimate test.

Leaderboard After Round 1

  • J.J. Spaun: -4 (66)
  • Brooks Koepka: -2 (68)
  • Jon Rahm: -2 (68)
  • Additional players tied at even par or worse

Stay tuned for Day 2 coverage as the leaderboard tightens and the cut line looms.

Bryson DeChambeau Dodges Double Penalty in Wild U.S. Open Moment at Oakmont 2025

June 13, 2025 by markmusicrecordshop

Bryson DeChambeau, his caddie, and a USGA rules official discuss relief options during the first round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

The opening round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club proved challenging for defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who finished with a 3-over 73 after struggling both off the tee and on the greens.

The biggest headline? A near-rules disaster on the par-5 4th hole.

After finding a fairway bunker, Bryson’s ball rolled into a spectator crosswalk, classified as ground under repair. He picked it up for relief and began lining up a drop closer to the green. But a USGA official intervened, informing him the drop had to be taken on the tee side of the crosswalk—and that once lifted, the ball had to be dropped, not replaced.

Then came the second close call: Bryson started to place the ball instead of dropping it—an automatic two-stroke penalty had he followed through. Thankfully, the official stepped in just in time.

🔹 Two penalties avoided
🔹 Just 12 yards lost
🔹 Still walked away with par

The rest of the round saw a steady front nine followed by three bogeys on the back—highlighted by a gutsy 25-foot bogey save on the 12th.

One of the more chaotic (and rule-filled) rounds of Day 1 at Oakmont.
